The study permit is a document that is issued by the Canadian government to foreign nationals who wish to study in designated learning institutions (DLIs) within Canada but you cannot enter the country with just a study permit, so a study permit is not the same as a study visa. Study visa is an official stamp on your passport by government officials which allows you to travel to Canada. In most cases, a study permit lasts for the duration of your study program, plus an additional 90 days or a year. These extra days are given to you so that you can prepare to leave the country, or to apply for an extension of your study permit.
Study Permit Extension
The purpose of the study permit extension is to extend the time a student spent in Canada to finish their program while they have a study permit. After completing a program, those who wish to remain in Canada longer can either obtain a work permit or apply for a visitor permit.
